Audio content
“Those of you who are far away, listen to the sound, and those of you who are close, look with your eyes. Even the Lord of Kamakura must have known that there was a man called Imaishiro Kanehira, who was 33 years old and the foster son of Kiso-dono. He shot eight arrows at Kanehira, who was trying to kill him and enter the presence of the Lord Hieisa, and shot him down. He shot down eight of the enemy on the battlefield, not knowing whether he would live or die, and then drew his sword and cut and slashed around, but there was no one who would meet his eyes. He shot and shot, but if the armor was good, he could not get behind it, and if he did not shoot at the openings, he would not be injured.

About this concert
This is a small concert where you can listen to Heikyoku (The Tale of the Heike Listened to by Heike biwa) from Volume 9 of The Tale of the Heike, “Kisosaigo”. Even if you don’t know the whole of The Tale of the Heike, or if you’re not familiar with history, that’s fine. This is not a study session, so please feel free to join us. At regular performances, the recitation and the modern translation are alternated, but for “Kisosaigo” we will refrain from the oral modern translation as it is easy to understand, and plan to spend more time listening to the Heikyoku itself. We hope that you will be able to experience the sounds that express the old language and interactions, but as it would be bad if you don’t understand the story too much, we will prepare a printout of the modern translation. We hope you will listen to the performance while checking the text in your hand from time to time (please note that this may change).

Kiso Yoshinaka Looks Back: The Tale of the Heike Listened to by Heike Biwa, Volume 9 “Kisosaigo” has been certified by the Kanagawa Prefecture as part of the Kanagawa Culture Program.

The Background to “Kisosaigo
Kiso Yoshinaka, who rose in rebellion in the Shinano region, drove the Taira clan from the capital, but his reputation in the capital was not good. As there were many people who disliked Yoshinaka and his army, MinamotonoYoritomo dispatched Yoshitsune and Noriyori to hunt down Yoshinaka.

Summary of “Kisosaigo”Chapter 9 of the Tale of the Heike

Then, OndahachirouMoroshige appears, and Tomoe puts up a final desperate fight. After that, the only one left by Yoshinaka’s side is Imai Shiro Kanehira. Yoshinaka tries to die with him, but Kanehira tearfully urges Yoshinaka to head for Matsubara. With Yoshinaka heading for Matsubara, Kanehira’s final battle begins. In order to buy Yoshinaka a little time before he commits suicide, Kanehira is the only one to raise his voice and fire an arrow.
