The Tale of the Heike Listened to by Heike Biwa: The Final Sea, Dannoura is a “Kanagawa Cultural Program Certified” and “Kanagawa Prefecture Cultural Festival Participation Program”.
About this concert
This is a small concert where you can listen to Heikyoku (a recitation of The Tale of the Heike accompanied by Heike biwa) in an old private house in Kamakura, with some of the text translated into modern Japanese. The simple sound of the Heike biwa, the voice of the narrator, the flowers and plants that mark the end and beginning of each season, and the Enoden train that passes right by the room. The vitality of the various lives that can be felt in this place is superimposed on the vitality of the lives of the people who fought in the battle 800 years ago.
Please note: Due to time and composition constraints, not all of the Heikyoku will be performed. Please understand that some of the stories will only be partially performed.
The final sea, Dannoura. The scenery of that day. The voices of that time. The final sea, Dannoura, where we gather and speak of the murmur that we cannot see now.
Tale of the Heike, Volume 11, “The Battle of Dannoura”
At Dannoura, the Genji and the Heike raised battle cries that echoed through heaven and earth. Tairano Tomomori stood on the deck of his ship and encouraged his men, saying, “Even the greatest generals and warriors in Japan, China and India are powerless when their time is up. But their names are precious. For what purpose are you sparing your lives? This is the last day for the army.”
Tale of the Heike, Volume 11, “Touya”
Wadanokotarou Yoshimori of the Genji fires arrow after arrow at the Heike forces. Niinokishirou Chikakiyo of the Heike fires back at the Genji, hitting a ship. The soldiers of the Genji and Heike fought on, sparing no lives, but the Genji were unable to lay a hand on the ship because it contained the Emperor Antoku and the three sacred treasures. Then, something like a white cloud drifted through the sky.
Tale of the Heike, Volume 11, “Senteigojyusui”
The Genji forces continue to take down the Heike boats one after another. Tairano Tomomori senses that his end is near and begins to clean the boat that the emperor is on. Niinoama says, “Even though I am a woman, I will not fall into the hands of the enemy. I will go with the emperor,” and she proceeds into the sea with the emperor.
Tale of the Heike, Volume 11, “The Last Days of Notodono”
Noritsune, the governor of Noto, did not recognize Yoshitsune’s face, so he attacked the warrior in splendid armor one after another. He managed to get on Yoshitsune’s boat, but Yoshitsune jumped to a boat belonging to his allies. Noritsune was unable to pursue him, and threw his weapons and helmet into the sea, spreading his arms out and saying, “Anyone who thinks they can take me on, come and fight me and take me alive.”
Tale of the Heike, Volume 11 “Naishidokoro(Divine Mirror) Miyakoiri”
The end of the army. Red flags and red seals are cut down on the sea, as if the autumn leaves of the Tatsuta River had been blown about by the storm. The white waves are tinged with light pink.
