Please be careful with the volume.
Time: 5 minutes 38 seconds
Recorded: July 26, 2024 (live)

At the KamakuraKomachian reading course, after everyone has read the story, they listen to a recitation accompanied by Heike biwa at each section (the audio is the recitation of the last section).
Content
The flute in question was given to Tadamori’s grandfather, Tadamori, by the Emperor Toba, and was passed down through the generations to his son, Morimori. It is said that he was given the flute because of his skill. His name was Koeda. Although it is said that the truth of Kyogen is a tale, it is a pity that it eventually became the cause of praising Buddha.

Modern translation
That flute was a gift from the Toba Emperor to his grandfather Tadamori, who was a master flute player, and it was passed down to Morimori, but it was actually owned by Atsumori because of his good looks. The flute was called “Koeda”. Although it is a story embellished with flowery language, it is a sad story that eventually became the cause of praising the virtues of Buddha.

Event Report – Reading Course at KamakuraKomachian

In July, we held a reading class at KamakuraKomachian, where we read the ninth volume of the Tale of the Heike, “Atsumorisaigo”. Thank you to everyone who came along, whether you came as a family, in a kimono, as part of a trip, or asked a friend to sign you up. I was so busy with the proceedings that I couldn’t talk to everyone individually, so I’m sorry about that. I listened to the recording of the event afterwards… the biwa and the narration… I’ll continue to practice.

I’ve been giving a reading course at KamakuraKomachian since spring, but I’ve started receiving requests for online distribution from people who live far away or who have difficulty attending due to their schedules. I can’t respond immediately, but I’ll gradually prepare the environment for next year. Please wait a little longer.

Information about the September reading course – “Kisosaigo” (Part 1)

The September reading class will be the first part of “Kisosaigo” from the ninth volume of the Tale of the Heike (there will be no class in August). In June and July, I held a small concert in Kamakura called “Kiso Yoshinaka looks back” where I told the Heikyoku “Kisosaigo”, but there wasn’t enough time. I’ve had to shorten it, but I’d like to tackle it in two parts at the reading class. The September class will be the first part, up to the point where Tomoe shows him her final battle. The October class will be the second part, from the point where he is left alone with Shirokane. Please forgive me if there are any slight changes.

A brief summary of “Kisosaigo
Kiso Yoshinaka is cornered. He urges Tomoe, the female warrior who has remained loyal to him until the end, to leave the battlefield. After much conflict, Tomoe decides to part ways with Yoshinaka and challenges him to one last battle. After that, only Imai Shirokanehei remains by Yoshinaka’s side. A deep bond and a promise made. Kanehira, who sent Yoshinaka to Awazu no Matsubara, faced his only enemy in order to buy Yoshinaka some time before he committed suicide.

About this course
The reading course held at this venue is structured so that everyone reads together and listens to The Tale of the Heike Listened to by Heike biwa accompaniment. This course is not about teaching how to sing or play Heike biwa, but we may try to make some of the memorable turns of phrase sound a little more like you. The course uses a text written in hiragana. I will read the text first, so please join in and read it with me. Please don’t worry, as this is not a course for learning about history in depth or for perfecting your reading. I hope you will enjoy spending some relaxed time reading the story aloud, not worrying about making mistakes, and focusing on how you feel.

This is a small course with a maximum of 6 participants each time. It is a tatami room, but we will provide chairs so you don’t have to sit on your knees. You will hear the Heike biwa narration at each section of the reading. There are no restrictions on age or gender, and you can participate in just one session if you like. We welcome individual participants. Please feel free to apply.
