Join us in Kamakura for the Tale of the Heike. The reading class started in April at the Learning Place KamakuraKomachian. In June, the third session, “Chikubushimamamoude,” the seventh volume of the Tale of the Heike, was held. Due to circumstances beyond the control of the management office, this time the class was held without students. We apologize for that. Since we were unable to attend this lecture, we have prepared an audio recording of part of the lecture so that those who were not able to attend could get a feel for the atmosphere of the lecture. Please try to speak out loud with us.

The Tale of the Heike, Vol. 7 “Chikubushimamoude
Taira no Tsunemasa, a skilled poet and orchestrator, was deeply moved by the natural beauty of Chikubushima, which he visited on his way to war. He felt that the island was a sacred place, so he prayed to the gods and played his biwa.

Synopsis of Where to Read
As the sun gradually set, the monks living there handed the biwa to Kyosho, saying, “We have heard that you are a master of the biwa. As Sutemasa played a secret piece of music by Jangen and Ishigami, the god Chikubushima Myojin could not bear the feeling, and a white dragon appeared on his sleeve. Thereupon, Kyosho expresses his feelings in a song.

modern translation
As he played the secret piece by Jougen and Sekishou, the shrine was so clear and so atmospheric that Chikubushima Myojin was so overcome with emotion that he appeared as a white dragon on Tsunemasa’s sleeve. The tears of joy did not cease to flow from Tsunemasa’s eyes, and he put down his biwa for a moment. I prayed to God and my wish was granted, and a sign clearly appeared.

The Tale of the Heike, Vol. 9: Atsumorisaigo
Kumagai Jiro Naozane, a warrior of the Genji clan, was defeated at the Battle of Ichinotani and followed the fleeing Heike nobles to the coast. There he encounters a young warrior wearing luxurious armor. Kumagai succeeds in capturing him, but realizes that the young warrior is about the same age as his own son. Kumagai feels compassion for him and wants to save his life, but the young warrior refuses. Kumagai grips his sword in a conflicted grip, knowing better than to fall into the hands of his allies, who are closing in behind him.

From the Management Office
We apologize for the inconvenience, but please proceed to the application page from the detailed page for each date (applications have not started for those that have been marked as soon-to-be-opened).

Since both the reading lecture and the performance will be in small groups, there may be times when there will be only one participant. Please be assured that we will give performances and lectures even if you are alone. If you are unsure about participating, you may find it easier to get a feel for the atmosphere by listening to the audio of the performance and blog posts. We look forward to your continued participation in both the small concert and the lecture.
