The Tale of the Heike, Vol. 9 “Ujigawanosenjin” 8 min. 47 sec.
*Please note the volume.
Some parts may be difficult to hear due to the sound of the venue being left intact.

Today’s entrance. The colorful greenery looks like a tunnel.

To the left of the entrance, there was a tokay grass.

Kusudama clover at my feet. Cute like beer hops.

There was a Genpei kogiku (small chrysanthemum). It is said that it is compared to the flag of Genpei because it starts out white and turns red from there. I like both colors!

The entrance of the building had this atmosphere. The owner has mosquito coils burning, but if you are concerned, please come with countermeasures.

Dress for Performance
Today I wear a dark blue hakama with a gray han-haba obi and haori. The kimono is a soft yellow.

My position is on the window side. The audience is invited to listen to the storytelling while looking into the garden through me. This time, I performed “Nidonokake,” “Ikezuki,” “Ujigawanosenjin,” and “Sakaro” in addition to the episodes of the Kajiwara Clan in the Tale of the Heike. The sound at the top of this page is the actual performance of “Ujigawanosenjin,” and when Shiro Takatsuna Sasaki runs across the stage, the sound of the Enoden train is heard! It was a moment of joy that could only be experienced at this venue.

Heike biwa accompaniment is used to tell the tale of the Heike, which is a combination of various sections of a single tale, and the way the tale is told changes in a circular fashion. I, who knew nothing about history or the classics, found the Tale of the Heike enjoyable thanks to my master, who taught me the joy of heikyoku by opening the story with sound. I will continue to travel through the tale with my master and practice so that I can take you all on a long journey. Not a day goes by without challenges, but the warmth of your participation today was very encouraging. I look forward to talking with you again about how we can work together to preserve the history and culture of our community! Thank you again to the owner of the venue.

The next concert at this venue is Tuesday, June 25. Kiso Yoshinaka will appear.

Synopsis of the performance
The Tale of the Heike, Vol. 9: “Kisosaigo”
Kiso Yoshinaka is cornered. Tomoe, a female warrior who remained loyal to him until the end, was urged by Yoshinaka to leave the battlefield. After much conflict, Tomoe decided to part ways with Yoshinaka and challenged him to one last battle. After that, only one man remained by Yoshinaka’s side, Imai Shiro Kanehira. A deep bond and a promise exchanged. He sent Yoshinaka to Awazu-no-Matsubara, and in order to buy a little time before Yoshinaka committed suicide, Kanehira faced the enemy alone.
