Off the Coast of Nachi|The Tale of the Heike Listened to by Heike Biwa in One’s Sleep

[about this concert]
The Tale of the Heike, listened to in one’s sleep, is a concert in which you can listen to Heikyoku, a recitation of The Tale of the Heike accompanied by Heike biwa, while lying down (in bed). Why not escape from your daily life and enter the world of The Tale of the Heike? You may feel sleepy from the difficult words and sounds, but it’s okay if you fall asleep. The sound of the Heike biwa and the narrator’s voice are the stage setting. Please create the scenery of the story in your mind. *The Tale of the Heike, listened to in one’s sleep, performed on the Heike biwa, held on Tuesday, August 27, 2024, at Nachi-no-oki (Off the Coast of Nachi) is certified by the Kanagawa Prefecture as part of the Kanagawa Culture Program.

[Off the Coast of Nachi]
I will be reading “Yokobue” and “Koremorijusui” from the Tenth Volume of the Tale of the Heike. Each story depicts the liberation from the suffering of this world and spiritual sublimation. Tokiyori and Yokobue’s story achieves spiritual growth and liberation through the form of becoming a monk, while Koremorijusui chooses the path to enlightenment by ending his own life, severing his lingering attachment to his family and companions.

Tale of the Heike, Volume 10, Yokobue
Taira no Koremori heads from Yashima to Koyasan, struggling with his feelings for his family back in the capital. There he meets Takiguchi Nyudo (Saito Takiguchi Tokiyori), a man who once loved a woman named Yokobue, but who, despite his family’s objections, chose to pursue the Buddhist path. This is the story of Yokobue, who inspired Takiguchi Nyudo to turn to Buddhism, and who watches over Taira no Koremori as he dies.

Tale of the Heike, Volume 10: Koremorijusui
After visiting the three Kumano mountains, Taira no Koremori and his men head out to sea. Before entering the water, Koremorijusui is wracked with thoughts of his family, and Takiguchi Nyudo, wiping away his tears and feigning composure, tries to talk him out of it. The film depicts Koremorijusui’s final moments, as he cuts off his lingering attachments and chooses the path of enlightenment.
