Tale of the Heike Reading Course to Begin|April 2024|KamakuraKomachian

A course will begin in April 2024 at Kamakura Komachian. This course is a reading course in which everyone will listen to a reading and performance (narrative of the Tale of the Heike accompanied by the heike biwa). Don’t worry if you don’t understand the story or the words seem difficult! The course will proceed slowly with hiragana text. This is a lecture, but let’s study history! We will master how to read! It is not a course to study history or to master how to read. Read the story out loud. Don’t worry if you make mistakes. We are trying to give you a chance to feel what you feel when you listen to the performance. We aim to offer such a relaxing class. One-person participation is welcome.

The venue is a tatami room. During the test session, participants sat on zabuton (cushions), but since the lecture will last about 90 minutes, I am planning to use chairs. Since this is a small lecture with a capacity of 6 people, I will move from one room to the other, and you will listen to the Heike Biwa narration at each break while I read with everyone else. It will be held once a month, except for August and December, on Friday mornings.

This is not a course to teach how to sing or play the heike biwa, but I would like to invite you to join me for a bit of vocalization of some of the characteristic readings, such as “mooo~su~”. I will read the hiragana text first, then I will read the text together with the participants, and at each break, you will listen to the narration while looking at the modern translation.
