Would you like to hear the Tale of the Heike in Kamakura? We are pleased to announce a small concert to be held on weekdays during the daytime on June 25 and July 30, 2024, Kiso-Yoshinaka looks back|The Tale of the Heike Listened to by Heike Biwa|Vol. 9 “Kisosaigo”. This concert is certified as Kanagawa Culture Program by Kanagawa Prefecture.
The location is Garden & Space Kuru Kuru, a 10-minute walk from Kamakura Station and about a 3-minute walk from Enoden Wadazuka Station. It is a wonderful place where various plants show their expressions in each season. In the current season, the entrance is like a tunnel of greenery. If you follow the tiles at the foot of the entrance, you will see two buildings, and in front of them is the Tea House Kukka. The building behind them is the venue. Since it is surrounded by plants, there are also insects due to the season. Please take precautions against insects.
The concert hall has a capacity of 6 people, so you can sit comfortably. I will be seated by the window, and you will be able to see the garden through me. Here I will be reciting the Heike Monogatari (Tale of the Heike) from the Heikyoku (a recitation of the Tale of the Heike accompanied by Heike biwa).
Kiso Yoshinaka, who raised an army in Shinano Province, drove the Heike out of the capital, but his reputation in the capital was not good. There were many people who disliked Yoshinaka and his army. MinamotonoYoritomo then sent Yoshitsune and Noriyori to hunt down Yoshinaka.
Summary of “Kisosaigo” from the Heike Monogatari, Volume 9
Kiso Yoshinaka is cornered down to his last five horsemen. Yoshinaka strongly urges the remaining female warrior Tomoe to flee quickly. Even so, Tomoe does not leave. Then, Tomoe displays her final military skills against the newly arrived OndahachirouMoroshige. The only one left by Yoshinaka’s side is Imai Shiro Kanehira. Yoshinaka, who says he will die with him, tells Kanehira to go to the pine grove while crying. Kanehira’s final battle begins with Yoshinaka heading for the pine grove. He buys Yoshinaka a little time before he kills himself. Kanehira is the only one who raises his name and draws his bow.
Even if you don’t know the whole Tale of the Heike, or if you’re not familiar with Japanese history, that’s fine. This is not a study group, so please feel free to apply. There were women and men who risked their lives for the men they loved. If you know that, that’s enough.
At our regular concerts, we alternate between the modern translation and the narration, but this time we’re thinking of reducing the modern translation as much as possible. The Heikyoku Kisosaigo is a story that is easy to understand. I hope that you will be able to experience the sounds that express the dialogue and language used in the olden days for a long time. However, it is also important to understand the story, so I plan to prepare a modern translation in print form. I am thinking of a format where you can listen to the performance while looking at the printout from time to time (please note that this may change).
