Classics to listen to while you sleep? The 8th Yokohama Triennale Support Program “The Tale of the Heike Listened to by Heike Biwa @ Yokohama|Chikubushimamoude in one’s sleep” will be held.

The 8th Yokohama Triennale will be held from March 15 to June 9, 2024. The Yokohama Triennale is an international exhibition of contemporary art held every three years in Yokohama. This time, we will hold “The Tale of the Heike Listened to by the Heike Biwa @ Yokohama|Pilgrimage to Chikubushima” as one of the many supporting programs held in Yokohama City.

The Tale of the Heike, listened to in one’s sleep (while lying down), accompanied by the Heike biwa. This may be a unique concert. You will be asked to listen while lying down, so you may fall asleep if you feel sleepy. The place is an underground studio in front of Yokohama Stadium and the capacity is a small group of 8 people.

Other than lying on a yoga mat, the only stage set-up is the sound of the Heike biwa and the narrator’s voice. If you do not know the story, that is okay, as we will include a short explanation. As you listen, why don’t you construct in your mind the scenery of the story as you each feel it? In this day and age when so many things are changing at a dizzying pace, close your eyes for a moment. Let the light shine on your own senses. I hope you will join me in the world of the Tale of the Heike, which lies on the border between dream and reality, while freely imagining the flowers and plants of Chikubushima. We sincerely look forward to your participation.

The Tale of the Heike, Vol. 7 “Chikubushimamoude” Synopsis
Taira no Tsunemasa, a skilled poet and orchestrator, was deeply moved by the natural beauty of Chikubushima, which he visited on his way to war. Feeling that the island was a sacred place, he prayed to the gods and played his biwa. Then…. If you listen to the music and reflect on the movement of Kyomasa’s heart, something unseen may appear at the end of the piece.
