Today we would like to give you information about the small concert “Songs of That Person: Kaidoukudari” that will be held on Tuesday, October 8th. We will also be giving a report on the “Songs of That Person: Yokobue” concert that was held on September 10th.
・Event Outline
Songs of That Person is a small performance of around 15 to 20 minutes in length, in which the songs from the Heike Monogatari are recited to the accompaniment of the Heike biwa. In October, we will be reciting two songs from the section ‘Kaidoukudari’.

From the Heike Monogatari, Volume 10, ‘Kaidoukudari
“How I long for my hometown, as I sit in this red clay hut on my travels”
“I don’t even miss my hometown. If the capital is not my final home, then I have no home.”
The story of the ‘Kaidokudari’ is about Tairanoshigehira, who was captured by the Genji clan, and his journey to Kamakura on MinamotonoYoritomo’s orders. The story depicts Tairanoshigehira’s thoughts as he travels, as well as the scenery he sees along the way. On the way, he stays at the Ikeda inn with a lady-in-waiting from Kumano, and the lady-in-waiting composes a poem thinking about the fact that Shigehira is staying in a place like this. Shigehira also reads a reply poem. Later, when he hears about this girl, he finds out that she was the beloved of the Minister of Yashima (Taira no Munemori). She had asked for leave of absence to be with her aging mother, but was not allowed to do so, and so she left the capital, singing the poem “How can I bear to leave the spring of the capital, but will the flowers of my beloved homeland wither?” Shigehira’s journey to Kamakura continues.

Ooisomachi Shigitatsuan
This poem, which is said to have been written by the Heian-era poet Saigyo, “Even my heartless body knows the pathos of the autumn dusk in Shigitatsuzawa”, is said to have been written while wandering around the coast of Oiso. Shigitatsuan, which takes its name from this poem, was founded in the early Edo period by Sokusetsu of Odawara, who erected a stone monument at Shigitatsuzawa and built a thatched hut there, transporting a stone statue of the Five Wisdom Buddhas. It is one of the three great haikai (haiku) training centers in Japan, and has been in existence for over 300 years.
・Event Report (September 10th)
On September 10th, I told two songs from the Heike Monogatari, Volume 10, “Yokobue”. Thank you to everyone at Shigitatsuan and the organizers for this new opportunity to learn. Also, thank you to everyone who came from far away in the heat to listen to my still-imperfect storytelling with such enthusiasm. I will continue to work hard.
Although we will not be able to enter the waiting room at Shigitatsuan until 10:30, thanks to the kindness of Shigitatsuan, we will be singing the parts before and after the song from shortly after 10:00. As we are still preparing, we will not be able to give any greetings or explanations, but if you arrive early or are interested in Heikyoku, please feel free to come in.

Narration
“Until I shave, I have nothing but resentment, but I am on the true path of Azusa-yumi, and I am happy.” The Yokobue replies, “Even if you shave, I have nothing but resentment. If you have a heart that wants to stop playing Azusa-yumi, then you should.”
